A Dala horse or Swedish: Dalahäst) is a traditional carved, painted wooden statue of a horse originating in the Swedish province of Dalarna (Dalecarlia). In the old days the Dalecarlian horse was mostly used as a toy for children; in modern times it has become a symbol of Dalarna, as well as of Sweden in general.
Dalahors have been manufactured since the 17th century as a by-product of the furniture carpentry in the region, or as a toy sold in markets in Central Sweden. The decoration is the same as found in other folk art, especially the pumpkin painting, from the neighborhood; the decoration itself is called a ripple.
